Admire some of the finest examples of Portuguese architecture in the magnificent city of Lisbon. Beginning with a visit to the historic district of Belem, site of the stunning Jeronimos Monastery, discover the place where Vasco Da Gama famously set off to explore the new world. The monastery itself offers a remarkably well-preserved example of Portuguese religious architecture with its elegant cloisters and rich carvings. Then head to the Baixa, the city’s downtown, with its principal thoroughfares such as Avenida da Liberdade and Marques de Pombal Square and, finally, to Alfama, the city’s oldest quarter. In the afternoon, drive north to discover Fatima, one of the most famous destinations of Catholic pilgrimage in the world. Here in 1917 three children reported seeing a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary and the village has been a shrine for the faithful ever since. Some 70,000 worshippers were present at the last apparition, which was subsequently dubbed The Miracle of the Sun. Visit the Basilica and the Apparitions Chapel and enjoy some free time before returning to Lisbon. Two of Portugal’s most popular attractions – its capital and its most emblematic religious shrine – are included in this memorable all-day tour.
