Two-day Sahara movie trail from Hammamet

The vast beauty and magical panoramas of the Tunisian Sahara have formed the backdrop to many a famous movie and this two-day tour takes you to locations were films such Star Wars, Gladiator and The English Patient were shot. During desert odyssey you will travel through the breathtaking landscapes of this arid and often harsh environment. Your Hollywood adventure begins with a journey to the past at El Djem, which boasts a third century Roman amphitheatre that as well as being a Unesco World Heritage Site was also one of the stars of Gladiator thanks to a bit of digital remastering. Explore this awe-inspiring monument and its underground tunnel, where slaves and animals were held before fighting for their lives in the arena. Drive past desolate plains dotted with Berber settlements, golden sand dunes and lush oases as you travel to a galaxy farm, far away, where scenes from three of the six Star Wars movies were filmed. Visit Matmata, whose caves served as Luke Skywalker's home on the planet Tatooine. After lunch, travel to Douz, on the fringes of the desert, for your hotel stay. Before dinner, you can take an optional camel or caleche ride over the sands. Leave early next morning and cross Chott El Djerid salt lake, which is famed for its shimmering mirages and colours. Then head by 4WD vehicle to Onk Jemal, where you’ll find the film set city built for The Phantom Menace. Explore the surreal buildings before continuing to Chebika, a palm-swathed oasis that featured in many scenes in The English Patient.
